What Is Shotblasting

Shot blasting belongs in the same family of abrasive blasting processes as sandblasting and aqua blasting. The main difference is that shot blasting uses spherical shot as an abrasive media and a centrifugal wheel for propulsion, while sandblasting uses grains of sand and almost exclusively uses compressed air for propulsion and aqua blasting relies on high pressure water jets.

What Can Be Shotblasted?

Shotblasting Applications

Shotblasting is a more powerful method than sandblasting and can be used for larger and more difficult applications including stiff oxide layers and removal of thick coating that need a strong application force and a denser media material, such as steel shots to clean a surface.

Shot blasting is suitable for any industry that uses metal including agricultural, industrial, automotive, construction, foundry, shipbuilding, rail, and many others. There are many materials that can be cleaned by shot blasting including:

The Benefits Of Shotblasting

Shot blasting is similar but varies a little from sandblasting because it doesn’t require any sand. As an alternative, shot blasting uses steel beads that are blasted at a surface to clear off contaminants, stains and rust very easily and quickly. Shot Blasting has many benefits which include:

  • Removes Corrosion – Removing corrosion releases moisture and protects metal suraces. The polishing process can be used on a wide variety of metals and can remove even heavily rusted beams and masts from clean metal for reuse.

  • Repairs The Surface – The surface of blasted metal contains a much better layer of paint or other coatings than normal metal. A Shot blasted surface provides an extremely strong bond and helps the coating lasts as long as possible.

  • Effective In Fixing Defects – Any problems with the surface of the metal can be easily identified using and shot blasting can be an effective method to get rid of them. The small granules help in smoothing the surface, making it suitable for the next layer.

  • Environmentally Friendly – Shot blasting eliminates the need for harmful chemicals or cleaning agents. Just use the granules to grind the surface. The resulting powder is quickly removed by a specially designed machine.

  • Fast – Surface smoothing can take a long time using conventional methods. However, with shot peening it is possible to prepare the surface up to 75% faster, saving time and money in the long run, and providing an efficient alternative.
